Der er et yndigt land,
There is a lovely land,
det står med brede bøge
it stands with broad beeches
nær salten østerstrand;
near the salty eastern shore;
nær salten østerstrand;
near the salty eastern shore;
det bugter sig i bakke, dal,
it winds through hill and dale,
det hedder gamle Danmark,
it is called old Denmark,
og det er Frejas Sal
and it is Freya's hall
og det er Frejas Sal
and it is Freya's hall
Der sad i fordums tid
There sat in days of old
de harniskklædte kæmper,
the armored warriors,
udhvilede fra strid;
rested from strife;
udhvilede fra strid;
rested from strife;
så drog de frem til fjenders mén
then they went forth to foes' harm
nu hvile deres bene
now their bones rest
bag højens bautasten
behind the barrow's standing stones
bag højens bautasten
behind the barrow's standing stones
Det land endnu er skønt,
That land is still fair,
thi blå sig søen bælter,
for blue the sea encircles it,
og løvet står så grønt;
and the foliage stands so green;
og løvet står så grønt;
and the foliage stands so green;
og ædle kvinder, skønne mø’r
and noble women, lovely maidens
og mænd og raske svende
and men and sturdy youths
bebo de danskes øer
inhabit the islands of the Danes
bebo de danskes øer
inhabit the islands of the Danes
Hil drot og fædreland!
Hail, king and fatherland!
Hil hver en danneborger,
Hail every Danish citizen,
som virker, hvad han kan!
who does what he can!
som virker, hvad han kan!
who does what he can!
Vort gamle Danmark skal bestå,
Our old Denmark shall endure,
så længe bøgen spejler
as long as the beech tree mirrors
sin top i bølgen blå
its crown in the blue wave
sin top i bølgen blå
its crown in the blue wave
