Der er et yndigt land
"Der er et yndigt land" was first publicly performed and adopted as a national anthem in Denmark in 1844. It shares status with the royal anthem "Kong Christian," but is more frequently heard in the country.
Lyrics by Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger set to music by Hans Ernst Krøyer were first performed publicly.
The anthem quickly gained widespread popularity among the Danish people after its public debut.
Later that year, the Danish government officially adopted it as a national anthem.
Despite originally having 12 verses, performances of the anthem typically feature only the first verse in its entirety, followed by the last four lines of the final verse.
