Heróis do mar, nobre povo,
Heroes of the sea, noble race,
Naçao valente, imortal,
Valiant and immortal nation,
Levantai hoje de novo
Now is the hour to raise up on high once more
Os esplendor de Portugal
Portugal’s splendour.
Entre as brumas da memória.
From out of the mists of memory,
Ó Pátria sente-se a voz
Oh Homeland, we hear the voices
Dos teus egrégios avós
Of your great forefathers
Que há-de guiar-te à vitória.
That shall lead you on to victory!
Às armas! Às armas!
To arms, to arms
Sobre a terra, sobre o mar!
On land and sea!
Às armas! Às armas!
To arms, to arms
Pela Pátria lutar!
To fight for our Homeland!
Contra os canhões marchar, marchar!
To march against the enemy guns!
Desfralda a invicta bandeira
Unfurl the unconquerable flag
À luz viva do teu céu
In the bright light of your sky!
Brade a Europa à terra inteira
Cry out all Europe and the whole world
Portugal não pereceu!
That Portugal has not perished.
Beija o solo teu jucundo
Your happy land is kissed
O oceano a rujir d’amor;
By the Ocean that murmurs with love.
E o teu braço vencedor
And your conquering arm
Deu mundos novos ao mundo!
Has given new worlds to the world!
Saudai o sol que desponta
Salute the Sun that rises
Sobre um ridente porvir;
On a smiling future:
Seja o eco d’uma afronta
Let the echo of an insult be
O sinal de ressurgir.
The signal for our revival.
Raios d’essa aurora forte
The rays of that powerful dawn
São como beijos de mãe
Are like a mother’s kisses
Que nos guardam, nos sustêm,
That protect us and support us
Contra as injúrias da sorte
Against the insults of fate.
