Paraguayos, República o Muerte · Paraguayos, República o muerte!
Paraguay's current national anthem, "Paraguayos, República o muerte!", had its lyrics penned in 1846 by Francisco Esteban Acuña de Figueroa. The musical arrangement widely used today was developed and rearranged by Remberto Giménez in 1934.
Paraguay adopted its first national anthem, "Tetã purahéi," written entirely in the native Guaraní language.
President Carlos Antonio López translated the first anthem into Spanish, calling it the "Himno de la independencia."
Francisco Esteban Acuña de Figueroa completed the lyrics for the current national anthem, which was approved that year.
Remberto Giménez rearranged and developed the musical version of the anthem that is still in use today.
Paraguay's very first national anthem, adopted in 1831, was mandated by the ruler of the time to be performed exclusively in the native Guaraní language, with no Spanish translation.
