İstiklâl Marşı · İstiklal Marşı
The "İstiklâl Marşı" was adopted as Turkey's national anthem on March 12, 1921, with lyrics by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy. Its current musical arrangement by Zeki Üngör was adopted in 1930, after an initial composition was used for six years.
Mehmet Âkif Ersoy's poem, selected from 724 submissions, was unanimously adopted as the anthem's words.
Music composed by Ali Rifat Çagatay was adopted following a competition, used for six years.
The musical arrangement by Zeki Üngör was adopted, which has been used ever since.
The anthem was temporarily used by the short-lived Republic of Hatay until its union with Turkey in 1939.
Though Ersoy's poem has ten verses, only the first two are typically sung as the national anthem.
