Jana Gana Mana · जन गण मन
Rabindranath Tagore composed "Jana-Gana-Mana" in 1911, and it was officially adopted as India's national anthem on January 24, 1950. Its adoption was partly due to its unifying message compared to a popular alternative that offended some religious groups.
Rabindranath Tagore originally wrote the five-verse poem "Jana-Gana-Mana" in Bengali.
The "Free State of India" (Axis-controlled) first used "Jana-Gana-Mana" as its national anthem.
The choice of anthem was influenced by "Vande Mataram" personifying India as a Goddess, offending monotheistic Muslims.
On January 24, "Jana-Gana-Mana" was officially adopted as India’s national anthem, two days before the republic was declared.
Rabindranath Tagore, the composer and lyricist of "Jana-Gana-Mana," also wrote the music and words for the national anthem of Bangladesh.
