Zimbabwe adopted "Blessed Be The Land of Zimbabwe" in 1994 following a national contest. It replaced "God Bless Africa," an anthem previously shared by several other southern African nations.
Zimbabwe used "God Bless Africa" as its anthem, shared by many southern African nations and groups.
A national contest was launched to find a uniquely Zimbabwean national anthem.
Leading poet Solomon Mutswairo wrote the lyrics for the winning entry in Ndebele, Shona, and English.
Fred Lecture Changundega composed the music for the chosen national anthem.
The winning entry, "Blessed Be The Land of Zimbabwe," was officially adopted as the new national anthem.
The previous national anthem, "God Bless Africa," was used by at least half a dozen other former and current nations and groups across southern Africa.
