Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty
Uganda's national anthem, "Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty!", was composed by George Kakoma after an initial contest failed to find a suitable anthem. It was selected in July 1962, shortly before the nation gained independence.
A committee was formed to select national symbols, and a contest was held for a national anthem.
After the initial contest failed to yield a suitable composition, George Kakoma was commissioned to compose an anthem.
Kakoma composed the anthem within a day, and it was declared the winner a few months before independence.
The anthem, "Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty!", was officially adopted upon the country's independence.
At just nine measures in length, "Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty!" is one of the shortest national anthems in the world.
