Majulah Singapura
Singapore's national anthem, "Majulah Singapura," was composed by Zubir Said in 1956-57 for the City Council. It was adopted as a state anthem in 1959 and became the national anthem upon independence in 1965.
Zubir Said composed "Majulah Singapura" as a theme for the Singapore City Council's official functions.
The anthem was first performed publicly at the Victoria Theatre.
After attaining self-government, a re-written version of the song was adopted as the state anthem.
Upon Singapore's independence, "Majulah Singapura" was officially adopted as the national anthem.
The anthem's official arrangement underwent a re-orchestration to sound more solemn and inspiring.
The newly re-arranged version of the national anthem was officially unveiled to the public.
Despite Singapore having four official languages (Malay, English, Mandarin, Tamil), the anthem is officially sung only in its original Malay lyrics.
