Tautiška giesmė
"Tautiška giesmė," composed and written by Vincas Kudirka in 1898, became Lithuania's national anthem in 1918. It was abolished during Soviet occupation but later restored in 1990 when Lithuania regained independence.
Vincas Kudirka wrote both the poem and music for "Tautiška giesmė" while Lithuania was part of Czarist Russia.
The song was first publicly performed within Lithuania.
Declared the national anthem when Lithuania gained independence from Russia.
Abolished after Lithuania's annexation by the Soviet Union.
Suggested as a replacement anthem for the Lithuanian SSR amidst democratic reforms.
Restored as the national anthem when Lithuania declared independence from the USSR.
During the Soviet occupation, "Tautiška giesmė" was strictly forbidden to be sung, with a new anthem imposed for the Lithuanian SSR.
