Lijepa naša domovino
Croatia's national anthem, "Lijepa naša domovino," originated with lyrics published in 1835 and music composed in the 1840s. It was officially adopted as the Croatian anthem in 1972, even while Croatia was part of Yugoslavia.
Antun Mihanović's lyrics, "Hrvatska domovina," were first published in Danica (The Morning Star) magazine.
Josip Runjanin composed the music, based on Donizetti’s "O sole piu ratto" from his opera.
The musical score received minor changes from V. Lichtenegger.
The song was first sung as the unofficial national anthem at an exhibition in Zagreb.
It was officially adopted by the Croatian Constitution on February 29, despite Croatia being part of Yugoslavia.
The lyrics underwent a slight change following Croatia's independence.
The anthem's music was composed based on an aria, "O sole piu ratto," from the Italian opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" by Gaetano Donizetti.
