Die Bundeshymne · Bundeshymne der Republik Österreich
Austria adopted the "Bundeshymn" as its national anthem in 1947, replacing a melody associated with the Nazi regime after World War II. Its lyrics, penned by Paula von Preradović, were later revised for gender inclusivity in 2012.
The melody, possibly by Mozart or Holzer, first appeared in a Freemason lodge publication's appendix as "Bundeslied".
The Austrian Federal Government announced a competition for new national anthem lyrics.
Paula von Preradović's text was selected, and the "Bundeshymn" was officially adopted as the national anthem on February 25.
The anthem's lyrics were amended for gender neutrality, changing references to include "daughters" and "jubilant choirs".
The melody commonly attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is debated by scholars, with some suggesting it was composed by his contemporary and fellow lodge member Johann Holzer.
